I was recently asked about whether I would endorse a forthcoming telethon for the Northeast Regional Autism Center at Friendship House in my area of Northeastern Pennsylvania. As I have always supported autism acceptance and encouraged autistic persons' autonomy and dignity there are a few things that a program must possess. The program must not try to seek to change the person into something they will never be by force or coercion, it must be respectful and encourage the person to have choice and to deny 'treatments' they do not want. It must take the attitude of helping them 'navigate through the mainstream', not forcing them into some box that we label as the 'norm'. Based on this, I cannot in good conscience endorse this telethon or program.
